Marine and Protected Species Biologist, Offshore Wind

Imagine a future where you support Orsted’s offshore wind projects by providing guidance and specialist project management on marine, fisheries and protected species.

Join us in this role where you’ll get exposure to critical scientific decisions, work with regulatory agencies and research institutions, and be engaged in a variety of permitting activities to support construction and operation of offshore wind farms.

Welcome to Permitting, Environmental & Marine Affairs.

You will join the Strategic Permitting team, collaborating with your colleagues to support our offshore wind projects. Your responsibilities will include leading the scoping and implementation of marine mammal protection measures related to acoustic modelling and sound field measurements. Additionally, you will assist in carrying out project environmental monitoring surveys, which involves coordinating data collection and managing fisheries monitoring data. As a team, we are a small group of specialists who support our portfolio of projects across Region Americas as they seek to identify and implement scientifically and commercially viable options.

You’ll play an important role in:

  • preparing and reviewing permit applications related to the Marine Mammal Protection Act, Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) Construction and Operation Plans (COPs), and other relevant permits
  • leading the scoping and implementation of acoustic modelling and sound field measurements activities, including reviewing and contributing to study plans and reports
  • prioritizing, managing and tracking monitoring surveys and mitigation measures for fisheries, marine mammals and marine protected species
  • assisting with development of survey protocols, data management, and monitoring strategies that harmonize Orsted’s approach to scientific investigation and reporting across multiple projects
  • building and maintaining relationships and identifying opportunities to improve engagement with key stakeholders, including contractors, consultants and agency personnel
  • additionally, this role will work with Orsted’s team of senior scientists in a variety of tasks as assigned to develop and implement initiatives across the US offshore portfolio.

To succeed in the role, you:

  • hold a Master of Science (MSc) degree or have equivalent experience in marine science, environmental science, fisheries science, or other relevant field, and have a minimum of two years of professional experience in a relevant field
  • understand how environmental regulations related to marine life and habitats drive requirements for scientific surveys, assessments, and mitigation measures, particularly as they relate to offshore wind development in the US
  • possess a solid understanding of underwater noise impacts and have technical knowledge of acoustic modelling and sound field measurements
  • have general familiarity with regional fisheries surveys and marine wildlife monitoring activities, and understand how marine wildlife mitigation measures are implemented during survey and construction activities
  • have previous working experience with survey protocols, scientific reporting, and large data sets or data management tools
  • have exceptional communication skills including technical writing in English, stakeholder management, MS Office proficiency, and a curiosity and desire to be working in offshore wind as a crucial part of North America’s energy mix.

Maybe you’ve read the above and can see you have some transferable skills, even though they don’t quite match all the points. If you think you can bring something to the team, we still encourage you to apply.
